Valle Verde Elementary Volunteers Revitalize Garden Spaces

 Hi neighbors,

This month I want to share with you an exciting Walnut Creek Community Service Day project that benefited our public schools. Volunteers Jane Klinger and Renee Gregg led the ambitious project at Valle Verde Elementary School to build 6 planter beds for vegetables, wildflowers and fruits, plant several fruit trees and create a California native habitat garden to learn about water conservation, the reduction of pesticide use, and inviting beneficial pollinators.

Jane and Renee are parents at Valle Verde, and they thank the entire VV community and generous donations from local businesses for making this possible, especially Lisa and Ryan Pappas who put their woodworking skills to use on the garden beds – they even built a little bridge and benches from reclaimed fence wood.

Inspired by MDUSD’s Growing Healthy Kids program, these outdoor learning spaces will allow Valle Verde to better teach Next Generation Science Standards and other Common Core Standards during the school day. Planting is already underway – together with parent volunteers, teachers have led their students in planting winter crops, an apple tree, a mandarin orange tree and wildflowers. They are excited to (literally) see and eat the fruits of their labor soon!
